Onkyo, which means ‘audio’ or ’sound’ in Japanese, has been producing precision audio components for over a half-century. This Onkyo HT-S7100 is a serious home-theater surround sound system so your home entertainment won’t be compromised in any way. with up to 7.1 channels, you’ve got all the audio and video processing needed to take full advantage of the audio and video capabilities of Blu-Ray disc players and modern HD video displays, without the complexities of an individual component system. With one-cable HDMI connectivity, Audyssey automatic room setup and calibration, and Onkyo’s signature audio performance this sound system is the perfect complement to your HDTV. The front L/R and horizontal center channel speakers each feature a pair of 3-1/8 inch cone woofers and a high quality 1-inch balanced tweeter. For a coherent and timbre-matched surround field, the included surround speakers each use the same drivers as the front speakers, but employ only a single woofer. It also includes a high-power downfiring subwoofer with a 10-inch cone driver with an internal 290 watt amplification module. All crossover points in can be set to any of eight possible settings for ideal integration with the environment and listener preferences. The HT-S7100 featurs Audyssey’s Dynamic EQ algorithm, which refines the system’s frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment to compensate for deteriorations in the listening experience at different volume levels. When used in combination with the Audyssey 2EQ system, this feature tailors the receiver’s output to correct for room acoustics, listening position, and playback-level distortions, delivering an overall experience that is a much closer match to what the audio production engineers originally intended. The HT-S7100 is home-theater system ready. It includes a full-function RI (Remote Interactive) remote control and Onkyo’s RIHD

5 Stars Great HTIB with room to grow!
I’ve had the Onkyo S7100 for quite some time maybe for 9 months now and really enjoying it. To me this is the perfect HTIB (home theater in a box) that comes with a ‘real’ receiver, the SR606. (note: don’t know any new models that came out for Onkyo now since i was really satisfied with S7100 that didn’t even care for newer models if there are any.) This was perfect for me since, i was looking for a simple easy set-up home theater system that already comes with speakers and subs and and will give me room in the future to upgrade the speakers if i wanted to (Polk). This HT system gives me that flexibility. I have my PS3, 52A550 Samsung and a PC connected to the receiver using HDMI and everything works perfectly. This to me allowed me to step over completely into the HD world enjoying both 1080p HD video and the HD audio coming from blurays. I liked the simple set-up using the included mic, front speaker stands, bought gauge 14″ wires, wall speaker mounts and banana plugs from Monoprice and i was all set. I only have it set-up right now as a 5.1 (room layout constraints in new home) and I am enjoying the sound coming out it. I really enjoy watching movies and playing games with it filling my room with nice crisp sounds and full rich bass. Now i even re-watch movies just to listen and enjoy the sound (ie. Dark Night, Iron Man, 300, Cars, Wolverine). I even tried using Magic Mic (videoke console) connected to it and it is a blast singing with it, feels like singing in a concert hall or karaoke suite if you ever been into one, anyway just wanted to share that bit of info. I got the unit from [...] as a refurbed unit for a little over $[...] and the package came like it’s brand new and is perfect. The price as it is makes it a great buy already and for the price i paid made it a better buy. I’m a very practical person that really looks for the best value for performance (did a lot of research) and for the home theater stuff, S7100 gets it done for me.

4 Stars Good Value
I’ll start by saying that this is my first surround sound system.

I’m kind of a techie so I found this system easy to set up. All of the connections are labeled and color coded. Also the speakers calibrate themselves with the included microphone.

I was looking for a surround system in a box without a DVD player – I have my players – and with plenty of inputs. This one has four HDMI inputs plus lots of composite and component inputs.

I’m 98% happy with the remote, it operates the receiver, TV, Satelite DVR, Blu-Ray, and DVD recorder. Can’t ask for much more than that.

I really like surround, and this one does it well. I am pleased with the sound considering I spent so little. I have had stereos that cost more, and this surround system sounds better.

I have played some of my favorite CDs and they never sounded better.

I give it four out of five just because better sound is available, but for a lot more money.

5 Stars Great buy, quality product!
Got this package (from Vanns) about two months ago and it was a breeze to set up. Everything is labeled or color-schemed to make the installation easy. It comes in a huge box that has form-fitted foam padding for all the parts that arrived in perfect shape. Yes, the speaker wires are the thinnest around, but I used them to get set up quickly to check the sound. It was fantastic! Later I upgraded the wires for the rear speakers, but to be honest, I really can’t tell the difference in the sound. The system comes with a calibrated Audyssey 2EQ mike to check that you’ve hooked everything up correctly and to balance the sound around your normal viewing location. The four HDMI inputs allowed me to easily hook up my cable box (also DVR), blu-ray, and divx player. The Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver is pretty hefty and you will need shelf space that will allow a front facing of about 17″ across, 7″ tall, and about 14″ deep. The speakers and the subwoofer sound great. The system also looks pretty cool with my HDTV!

4 Stars Not that good. Its an OK! product.
I bought this item last week and it didnt reach my expectations.

The output is not that amazing for the price. The speaker stands are small & the wiring is too delicate to handle.

Connected the IPOD to the receiver using IPOD dock & its working but the RI is not working.I searched the entire manual & didnt find anything to troubleshoot this issue.

Speakers are huge & speaker wire is thin( May be because of that not able to see the required output).Remote control is worst than my LG TV remote.I have to press the buttons carefully every time. Its not at all user friendly.

Overall I am not happy with the product for the money i invested on it.I will soon replace it…

5 Stars Great sound and many inputs
I did a lot of research when trying to decide which receiver and speaker set up I wanted to purchase for my new home theater. I did not want to break the bank so the price needed to be less than $1,000. This somewhat pushed me into the “home theater in a box”(HTIB) area since usually purchasing quality receivers and speakers separately would get expensive.

After doing my research I settled on 2 brands which seemed to stand out in the HTIB category: Yamaha and Onkyo. There was discussion on how these two brands had the best sounding speakers.

My main drivers in ultimately deciding which brand to get was speaker/sub woofer power, upconversion capabilities, HDMI inputs and obviously price. Onkyo blew Yamaha out of the water with the speaker/sub power which was 130 Watts per speaker for Onkyo and 290 Watt sub compared to only 100 Watts speakers and 100 Watt sub for Yamaha. Onkyo had upconversion, but I wasn’t really sure about Yamaha. I think the top of the line system had it but info online wasn’t as clear as Onkyos. They both had 4 HDMI inputs which was what I wanted. Then finally the price for the Onkyo 7100 was $150 cheaper than the Yamaha comparable YHT 791. So this was a no-brainer decision for me.

I wasn’t even really looking for 7.1 but for the price I bought the Onkyo at it was really nice to have. Most of the other brands I looked at included DVD players which I didn’t care for and also had less HDMI inputs which were very important to me.

The sound is great, and I didn’t really have to look up much in the instruction manual to hook everything up. Another good thing is you don’t have to buy wall mounts for the speakers since they have holes on the back that will just require to screws in the wall to mount. Of course, the front two speakers come with stands.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Good Enough!
Pros:

– Good price for the features, tons of inputs

– highly configurable audio settings such as speaker levels, distance and size, and what inputs activate with which button press (eg, can route to “optical input 1″ with press of “cd” or “dvd” or whatever you choose in setup)

– can use 3rd party speakers

– good center channel separation (clear dialogue on DVDs and TV)

– clearly displays audio type (Dolby PL II, etc) it’s detected. Works great with my PS3; you see it switch over when a Dolby enabled game starts up

– low bit rate music (mp3, etc) optimization seems to work

Cons:

– HDMI passthrough means separately wiring audio, so you run out of optical inputs quick

– the many EQ presets are mysterious and seem to have little impact on the sound

– nighttime mode (lower bass?) only available in some inputs

– must hit the “receiver” button to access full audio options

– for all the cusomizeable features, very limited manual EQ choices (bass, treble)

– mediocre music performance overall

Overall, excellent value for the price. A little stronger on the TV/Movie side than for music listening, but I can’t crank this thing up in my crowded apartment building, so that could be a factor.

5 Stars onkyo HT-S3200 surround sound
I’ve been wanting a decent surround sound system for awhile now, did not want another dvd/cd player, have done a little research and decided on the Onkyo HT-S3200. With free shipping, the Amazon price, and their reputation for great customer service helped me bite the bullet and go ahead and order. The system arrived in five business days. While the supplied speaker wires seem to be a bit flimsy, they drive the speakers just fine. I had thought the speakers on my 73″ Mitsubishi DLP were pretty good and was more interested in the surround feature with the Onkyo system, but I was amazed at the difference in sound quality. Dialog is clearer, and background is distinct and much more meaningful.

The subwoofer as used with the default settings shakes the walls just fine. It can be cranked up but for my taste that would be too much. As for total volume, at the highest settings it won’t quite drive you out of the house, you will be able to hear it in the yard comfortably and the quality is excellent right up to full volume. As I had to run the surround rear speaker wire thru my attic I upgraded to 12 ga. wire for all the speakers. The cost was minimal and I just felt more comfortable using a stouter wire.

The instructions are a tad difficult, this may just be that there are so many features icluded in this system it would be difficult to explain in detail every one of them. Patience will help here. I did’nt need to contact the manufacturer to get it working.

There are tons of inputs to use. While you cannot use the HDMI as an audio input, there are digital audio, optical audio and RCA inputs. Plenty.

For the price this is a great system. Sound quality is very good. The surround feature works great. I highly reccomend it.

4 Stars Great Buy
The Onkyo HT-S3200 is a great entry level HTIB.Best bang for the buck.Has great sound. Only con is the need to use a seperate audio connection which isn’t bad at all.

4 Stars Not as good as expected, but worth the price.
I too was duped by this HDMI Pass-Though setup on my first set-up that didn’t work and after 3 different HTIB systemS not working I decided to get a regualer Home Theater System and Onkyo has always been very highly rated. I knew of the pass-through when I bought it, but all systems in this price range needed it, at least the several I looked at.

CONS – The HDMI Pass-Through wasn’t implemented properly compared to the other 3 setups I had. This thing needs a separate audio cable for every device, instead of just one optical out for any input selected. I ended up needing 3 optical cables, again I knew this from reading reviews, however I find out when it gets here that it only has one optical input and you need RCA cables for the rest [it did however, have a second optical input, but for CD only].

CONS – Subwoofer was horrible, I had to push the volume over 50 for decent bass which is way too loud to watch TV all day long. too loud for even 1 movie really. I tried different bass setting and push the bass up to max which was only +6db.

CONS – Speakers don’t have very good speaker stand mounts and seem to be for wall or table mount. They do give you plenty of rubber feet to help in vibration. watch the center channel as it is rounded and you’ll need to place the rubber mounts inwards a little.

OTHER THOUGHTS – The systems has excellent sound other than the lack of bass. The bass isn’t terribly low, I just like a little more punch to it. Rear speakers could have been longer, but I didn’t mark off stars for it as I have never had any stereo have long enough cables.

5 Stars PACKS A BIG PUNCH!!!
Man this little system rocks!!!

Pros:

Easy to install and setup

Lots of inputs

Great price

Sound is excellent

Bass packs a punch – rattles my whole house

Cons: HDMI pass through (no biggie though, just use optical cables)

*If you are looking for a entry level home theater sound system and don’t want to pay an arm and a leg, then this is the system for you.

If you want an idea of where Onkyo’s home theater packages are heading, the HT-S5200 is well worth checking out. Like previous Onkyo 7.1-channel receiver/speaker packages, the HT-S5200 delivers reassuringly hefty amounts of power and all-round performance. And in line with other recent offerings, it’s also perfectly suited for high-definition entertainment in the home: 1080p video takes center stage from sources such as Blu-ray Disc, DVD, HD broadcasting, and gaming. The emphasis is still on Onkyo’s audio prowess, so the HT-S5200 is equipped with three groundbreaking Audyssey technologies that will give you the edge in terms of surround sound. It also features some exciting innovations from Onkyo: a dedicated port that connects the iPod via the Dock for the iPod and DSP modes specifically designed for gaming. Includes dedicated RI iPod dock (UP-A1L) Audyssey 2EQ to Correct Room Acoustic Problems DOLBY Decoder – PLIIx, DD, DD-EX; DTS Decoder – DTS, ES, NEO6, 96/24 AM/FM 30 stations Preset Memory SIRIUS Radio Ready 4 Digital Inputs (2 Optical/ 2 Coaxial) 4 HDMI Inputs and 1 HDMI Output 6 Audio Inputs and 2 Audio Outputs 2 Components Input and 1 Component Output Front-Panel Portable input (stereo mini jack) Front – 2-way, bass reflex speakers (5 cone woofer and 1 balanced-dome tweeter) Center – 2-way, bass reflex speakers (3 1/4 cone woofer and 1 balanced-dome tweeter) Surround/Surround Back – Full-range, acoustic-suspension (3 cone) Woofer – Bass reflex (10 cone) Front Speaker – Dimensions – 6 1/8 W x 14 5/8 H x 7 13/16 D; Weight – 6.4 lbs.
User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Great system for the price
I needed multiple HDMI inputs and also something that would let me play music from my iPod while I decide on whether to add an AppleTV to the mix. I currently have a digital cable box & blue ray DVD player hooked up. Set up was a breeze. The color coded speaker wires for each speaker was a nice touch, however I ended up pulling my own wire through the house so didn’t use it. A word of caution – the listening mode is very important. The default setting on mine didn’t product any center channel sound (no voices on TV/movies) and it took me a while to figure that one out. On the flip side, the technical support folks at Onkyo were very helpful and patient with me. Also, be aware that the HDMI just passes through to the TV. The receiver doesn’t do anything with it and you will need a seperate digital connection from the source to the receiver for the sound. I at least knew this going in. I would much prefer that it did use the sound from the HDMI conncetion, however that seems to be a more expensive option, so I certainly cannot complain given the price of this unit.

5 Stars True Japanese Attention to Detail
If you are going to spend big bucks on a big screen TV, why not get a top rated audio system too.

Founnd the Onkyo 5200 system new for $447 total with shipping. With Direct TV Total Choice can listen to XM radio without turning on my 52″ TV.

So far, have the center and front speakers hooked up along with the sub woofer. Like the adjustable active sub woofer volume knob. Have more speaker wire on the way for the long wire runs on my side and rear speakers. Next, will begin mounting more speakers with the Sanus mount system.

The clear sound quality of this powerful 1200 watt system is superior for the money- as many reputable online review sources said. The powered (110 volt) sub woofer will make the floor shake and windows rattle. All of the wires are fully color coded making it very easy to hook up with no mistakes. It would be hard to be unable to easily get this system up and running if you can read this.

Consumer Reports rated the Onkyo 5100 model that this system recently replaced their highest rated choice for a home theater system. It was the only model that they rated “very good” for sound quality. All of the rest only rated “good” per their tests. This 5200 model is a new release to replace their 5100 system.

You can’t go wrong here for sound quality at a budget price. One will not find Onkyo systems at Wal Mart. One review source said Onkyo consistently beats other brands.

Did my research before buying this system and now have no regrets. My goal was top quality sound- period. Will add extras (DVD player…) after I have the system set up and properly tuned with their included syncronization mic system that automatically adjusts the system for each unique application, room size, etc.

3 Stars great BUT
This is a great setup but there is one problem…the wiring hookup from the receiver to the speakers is really badly designed….For the life of me, I cannot understand why they would use such an inadequate design….It is very iffy in trying to connect the speakers to the receiver…be sure to look at this prior to buying…if I had noticed I would have bought another system

4 Stars Best system for the price….
I’ve been using this for about a month now and I can say you cannot beat this system for the price. The sound is incredible, in fact it’s a little too overwhelming at first and I had to actually tone it down a bit with the manual settings. Using the auto-config was a cool feature but I found the bass and surround speakers to be a bit too loud for my taste. I agree with another reviewer – make sure you understand the dimensions before you buy, the speakers are definitely larger than most surround system’s I’ve seen (even the subwoofer is huge!). I’m still playing around with the settings as they’re a bit tricky to get right and it seems like they keep going back to the defaults even after I change them but maybe it’s something I’m not doing correctly. Also, I guess all of the sound modes are great, but it takes a bit of experimenting to find the right one(s) for whatever you’re listening too (music, games, movies, cable/satellite, etc). All in all this is a great system!

5 Stars Clean sound. Great quality for the price!
The remote can also control your tv and dvd (but not your cable box). It was simple to set up. The look of the speakers is sleek. I highly recommend this surround.

Sound makes up quite a bit of the home-theater experience when matched with your HDTV. Onkyo’s HT-S6100 helps make that match-up really easy. The HT-S6100 marks a major milestone for Onkyo: the company’s first receiver/speaker package to simultaneously handle 1080p video and bit-for-bit audio processing. The launch of the HT-S6100 marks another milestone for Onkyo: the company’s first receiver/speaker package to simultaneously handle 1080p video and bit-for-bit audio processing. The HT-S6100 anchors your home theater by integrating the full potential of high-definition media (think Blu-ray Disc) and high-definition displays. With an HDMI platform as good as it gets (integrating up to four sources), you have every reason to be impressed. But the HT-S6100 is also going to take analog sources (from component video, S-video and composite video) and upscale them to HD-friendly 1080i resolution for HDMI output.
User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Great for the price!
This system really hits hard. The satellites are not as clear or as detailed as a good set of $300 monitors, but they are pretty impressive for movies. Positioning is pretty much spot-on.

The menu system is incredibly easy to adapt to. Even your grandma that asks you to help her program her VCR could probably figure this thing out. You don’t need to output to a TV to use the core menu system, but it is a nice addition. After about two weeks of use, you can point the remote and press a series of buttons without even looking just to change what you want. It’s nice!

The sub woofer is really good as well. It doesn’t become very muddy like cheaper 5.1 system subs do. It’s nothing amazing, but it’s damn good.

The receiver really looks and feels like you paid $800+ for it when you use it. Brushed aluminum everywhere, tons of features and buttons.. even LCD display dimming which helps a ton when you want to fall asleep to a movie!

If you want a cost-effective 7.1 system that will knock your socks off when you watch a Blu-Ray movie, get this!

4 Stars great but maybe enough with lower system
so far it is beautiful. not yet try it for long enough with volume level i wanted…if youre crazy about the sound but want to get just a great sound…i think you could go lower than this one. bought samsung HT in a box for $1xx…the difference is not 6x better by paying onkyo $6xx….even though samsung player has its own thing as well.

5 Stars Audio Bliss
Others have done a fine job delineating the fine technical qualities of this unit. I bought it on sale from Vanns about 6 months ago–one of the best transactions I’ve ever had. Vanns is phenomenal! As for the HTS 6100, I’ve had Onkyo before, as well as Bose and Denon. While the latter two had their good points, the cost was not entirely justified by their ultimate quality. What I’ve found is that the 6100 gives me the same glorious, room-filling sound as my friend’s $2400 Bose system and another friend’s $2100 Denon home theater system. And now we can play our Blu-Ray discs with all the new codecs and hear it all!

What we love about the Onkyo is the shimmering treble and rumbling bass, neither of which distorts at higher volume levels. The midrange renders voice much more clearly than we had been exeriencing. The calibration system is very useful. If I had any bone to pick with this unit, it’s that assigning sound characteristics to various channels requires a bit of manual reading more than I would like. I’m sure they’ll find ways to make the user interface in this regard a little friendlier. Other than that, we love this unit and just wanted to add our voices to the rest of those who do as well. We are delighted with it!

5 Stars Dope system for the $$!!!
I had an HDTV and a PS3, but my old surround sound system was so outdated (RCA inputs!) that I didn’t want to even bother installing it in my new house. I was looking to piece together a nice system but I knew that I wanted an Onkyo receiver that would handle both HDMI audio AND video. I saw this boxed system online and decided that, for the price, the speakers and iPod dock were basically very inexpensive when you consider the price of the receiver alone.

I couldn’t be happier with this product!

Obviously when you are buying an “in the box” full system you are going to get crappy speaker wire (I think this was 18-gage). So I planned ahead and ordered 250′ of 2/C 14 AWG CL3 in-wall speaker wire on e-bay, knowing that I was going to eventually run everything in the walls & crawlspace.

Gathering all of the installation components took me a while so at first all I had set-up was the receiver, the sub, the center and front surround speakers and even with just those the sound was great. I will admit that the 6 satellite speakers are pretty dang big (about 14″ tall x 6″ wide x 4″ deep) and that would be my only con with this system.

When it came time to install everything, I even ended up buying 2 ceiling speakers for my kitchen, which run from the “B Zone” on the receiver. That gives us 5.1 surround in the living room and stereo sound in the kitchen, or we can just have sound running to the kitchen. This feature may not be useful to some, but we use it all the time and I love it (very nice if you don’t want to miss the football game). In fact, I think I may run another set of speakers from “Zone B”, with a volume control, to the back patio.

For about $600, this system is beyond a great deal.

5 Stars Great Value!
I’ve been searching all over for a HTIB system that would meet my needs, and after doing some research, decided to go with Onkyo. I have a fairly large living room with high ceilings that extends to my kitchen, so finding a decent home theater system to fill that room and sound decent wasn’t easy. I didn’t have $2000 to spend on a home theater system, so I had to find the best bang for my buck. This sound system has definitely met my needs, got it on sale for < $600 and has outperformed everything else I've tried (Yamaha, Sony, Panasonic, JVC). The speakers were a little bulky, but I was able to hook it up to my ceilings horizontally and it ended up looking better than I expected. The subwoofer is ginormous but very powerful. All the other HTIB systems I've tried lacked a powerful subwoofer, this has been the best so far.

The receiver has several inputs, more than you really need. The iPod dock seems to work ok so far, I was a little disappointed that it doesn’t work w/ my 3G iPhone, but it’s not a big deal. I would recommend getting a better gauge speaker wire as the ones the system came with are very thin, luckily my house is prewired w/ 16 gauge cables. Overall I’m extremely happy with this purchase and would highly recommend this system to anyone.

5 Stars Top notch!
Having been an Onkyo “head” for years, I am very impressed by the 9100. I was replacing a mis-mash of Infinity/Bose speakers and a Onkyo TX-DS575 receiver. My old setup sounded good, but WOW, my new setup sounds even better!

I was looking at upgrading my old setup with either speakers or a new amp. After reading about the 9100, I took the plunge. I must say, I am *very* satisfied! The package came quickly and was delivered in good condition. The color coded speaker wires and manual seemed simple enough, although the main manual is a bit cryptic (aren’t they all?). The included cabling is a bit too short and absurdly thin – I got some Monster Cable from HomeDepot (16ga) for peace of mind. For reference, my gaming/BluRay system is a PlayStation 3, Comcast HD Motorola DVR, Pioneer XM2Go unit, iPod Classic 80GB, and a Sony Reference CD player (early 90’s vintage). DVD and PS3 are hooked up via. Optical inputs. The rest use RCA’s.

The Audessy calibration was a snap and really works well. Surround tracks on movies and even sports events sound excellent. The channels seem to integrate flawlessly.

XM radio, CD’s or iPod content sound great! I feel like this is a Home-Theater-In-A-Box and then some! Bass response is powerful, but still tight. Mids and highs are crisp and the rolloffs sound well balanced. Jazz, techno, grunge, all sound great!

About the only thing to think about is the size of the speakers, they are large. If you want something compact, think twice. If you can manage with bigger speakers, tho, I can’t think of a better setup for under $1,000 (as of August 2009). Also be wary of subwoofer placement. I live in a 3 flat building and the sub placed against the wrong wall definitely resonates through wood walls/floors.

5 Stars Surround Sound
It’s good that they build the box so well, because it’s real heavy so the shippers just kick it, push it, and drag it. But that seems to be what I’m finding with Onkyo, they know what there doing. This is my second theater system in a year. The last one I put in sold with the house. I find them very easy to set up. You have to buy speaker wire, what comes with is not nearly enough. The only thing that can get tricky is setting up the imputs and the remote controller. I’m still working on the remote. This system has some real power and passes the hdmi thru fine.

5 Stars Great System
I have really enjoyed this system. Only had it a few weeks and my what a difference in the sound compared to my 15 year old system I previously had. Hook up was not that bad. Now I just need to read through the manual to learn about what all this system can do. There are alot of options where I could utilize the system better. But for just plugging it in and going I am really impressed at the sound quality. The system is a little “boxy”. But my room can handle it.

4 Stars Work for me, and work well.
I recently built a “media room” in my basement, and I have teamed this system up with a Samsung TV and a Panasonic Blu-ray player. All are connected through HDMI.

First, the speakers sound good. Really good. I’m no audophile or fanatic, but I’ve heard crappy speakers before and these are decent. One thing, though, right off the bat: Get rid of the wires that come with the system. They are plain-Jane “just get it done” wires that are not enough to channel the “power” through to the speakers. I replaced mine immediately with 12 gauge in-wall wires with banana plugs on both ends. That’s about as much as you’d need. I also replaced the subwoofer cable, which I recommend you do as well if you buy the system.

With the volume set at “-10″ I can hear the sound throughout my ranch style home, and once I crank it past zero and into the positive numbers, I can really hear it clearly wherever I am inside. I would love to know what volume setting is the loudest the system can safely handle for extended periods so I never take a chance on blowing them out, but for my room, I have never turned them past “12″ simply due to the fact that it’s quite loud enough. If you’re sitting ten feet away from the front and center speakers, I’ve found that even the negative numbers can be loud enough depending on the movie.

Secondly, the speakers are heavy. I don’t know how heavy speakers usually are, but for all of the speakers, I purchased mounts that could hold at the very least 25lbs. The two rear speakers I have hanging from the ceiling, but the rest are on little shelves with supports that can handle about 100lbs. You really don’t want to get anything weak or flimsy to hold any of these speakers. I put my mounts through wood beams, not through drywall only, due to the weight of the speakers. They are pretty substantial. Don’t cheap out.

Thirdly, set up was pretty easy. After mounting all the speakers where I wanted them and aiming them where I had to, I used the included auto-setup feature. You plug in an included microphone and follow the directions that are displayed on the TV (yeah, hook it up first). You have to move the mic a few times and make sure there is very limited or no noise in the room, and after about 10 minutes, you’re good to go. From what I understand, it sets up the various volume levels to be projected from each speaker, so the fronts are louder than the backs or sides to match where you will be seated. After setting it up, I haven’t had any issues with sound. If you have an HDMI capable TV, definitely use that to make set up easier.

I’ve watched a little under a dozen movies on the system so far and I’m happy with it. I only use the remote for “on” and “volume” so I can’t comment on that.

1 Star SWITCHED
Never recieved item ordered, supplying company: Stereo Advantage shipped a HT-S990thx system, older and less value, when I told them they offered discount, but system didnot interface with newer HDTV’s. I did get a refund, but not the product that I wanted.

Opting for the convenience of packaged home theater doesn’t mean you have to compromise on quality. With the HT-S6200 receiver/speaker package, you get advanced A/V processing and amplification with the Onkyo stamp of reliability. The receiver’s four HDMI 1.3a inputs handle 1080p video as well as high-definition surround-sound codecs by DTS and Dolby. Compatibility with Dolby Pro Logic IIz gives you the option of incorporating front height channels into your home theater set-up. Meanwhile, onboard Audyssey equalization and volume technologies adapt the soundstage to the dimensions of your room and maintain clarity at different loudness levels. A proprietary Universal Port allows single-cable connection of the included Dock for the iPod or an optional Onkyo HD Radio tuner. Low-end frequencies are handled by a 290 W powered subwoofer, while seven finely matched surround-sound speakers ensure that, whatever playback component you hook up, the HT-S6200 will deliver a fully immersive home theater experience. Audyssey 2EQ to Correct Room Acoustic Problems Universal Port for Single-Cable Connection of UP-A1 Dockfor the iPod or Optional Onkyo HD Radio Tuner 192 kHz/24-Bit DACs for All Channels HDTV-Capable (720p/1080i) Component Video Switching (2 Inputs and 1 Output) HD Radio Ready 40 FM/AM Radio Presets

5 Stars Amazing sound, Amazing deal
I spent a couple months researching various components, HTIB packages and every option in between for a combination of good quality, upgradeability and low to mid price range. I finally decided on this because of the reputation behind Onkyo, the 7.1 package and component style receiver which was missing in most of HTIB I found. Set up was with a Sony 42” Bravia LCD and PS3, which turned out to be super easy. Speaker wires were of good length but may decide to upgrade to better ones later down the line. The auto calibration mic was simple to use and essential for someone like me who isn’t the greatest with sound setup.

The receiver has everything you’d need for any basic setup you have including a couple game consoles, tv, stereo equipment, ipod dock (really great addition), etc. The audio presets work wonderfully, the menu is easy to navigate even if you can’t control it on your tv screen.

The speakers sound phenomenal! Coupled with any blu ray movie, they are a world of difference between any other HTIB or low end component systems I’ve tried out. If this is your first surround sound system, trust me this is a huge upgrade from a 2.0 system! The sub has great boom, tons of power to handle even the most bombastic soundtrack. The speakers themselves are crisp, clear, aesthetically attractive and sound great when turned up loud. I’ve tried them out with dialogue heavy movies like Casablanca, action flicks like Live Free or Die Hard, concert movies like Los Lonely Boys (Live in Texas), games like GTA4 and Killzone 2, and they all sound absolutely incredible.

Music when played through the system sounds really incredible. The receiver comes with various settings for different listening modes, all of which have their own unique character and enhance the listening experience.

If you are looking for a great start to surround sound systems cheaply priced and not cheaply made, BUY THIS!!! 7.1 receiver means you can upgrade as need be in the future, but imo most everyone would be more than happy with what you get right out of the box. Highly recommended.

5 Stars HTIB
The Onkyo HT-S6200 is very good, I am running the new LG 240HZ, Direct TV and the Sony BR thru it via HDMI. So far everything is GREAT.

Directions are OK, but could be better. It took me a while to figure it out.

I set up all devices to run through the RC-737M remote that came with the Onkyo, it’s nice to use one remote for everything.

5 Stars Thankyo…Onkyo…!

Pros

+ Amazing sound details – excellent sound processor

+ Woofer producing good bass

+ Maintains perfect balance of sound quality for different modes: Music, Movies, Games (This you find not in all HTIBs)

+ Full HDMI support (both audio and video).

+ Music:

* The detailed original sound from every instrument is great

* Very good voice level and quality

* The drums and the bass guitar sound is very real.

+ Movies/Games:

* Nice voice clarity

* Explosion, gunshots, accident sounds are great

Cons

- Not the best looking overall

- Could have had a better display

- Auto calibration reduces bass (so I turned down the woofer before calibrating and it is much better)

- Expensive

- Neighbors are not happy

Other thoughts

* Heavy! 70lb

* It warms up a bit, but I live in Buffalo so that is not a problem…,lol

* I noticed a little delay (may be in few milliseconds) when I connect and play my Yamaha keyboard. Then I turned down something like a sych settings and it is much better.

* So far I am satisfied

How long do I own? 2 Weeks

Would you recommend to a friend? Yes

PS: This is not a complete review as I am using the product for 2 weeks only. I ordered 6 speaker stands and I need to set it up and have to observe surround effects more. Most probably I’ll update this in a month or so.

5 Stars Great System
This system positively rocks. Quality sound, easy set-up, powered zone 2. I have owned the 6200 for about 2 months and can not find anything i dislike about it. It has plenty of power an awesome sub and even an ipod dock. I did upgrade the speaker wire to 16 gauge, but that was the only thing i had to do. Great Job….Onkyo

5 Stars A Satisifed Customer
Price is reasonable. Shipped fast and FREE

Setup is simple – but don’t rush it. I’d advise ordering banana plugs, and better (longer) speaker wire, 16ga max.

Watched ‘300′ Ultimate on PS3 in TrueHD…. WOW!

The sound is amazing, the lttle sub is brutal, it really thumps strong and clean. 2.0, 5.1, 7.1, etc. they all sound great, excellent seperation from all speakers, mp3s & CDs are awesome too.

-A sad tale with a happy ending-

The unit switched into ‘protect mode’. Tried all the fixes that I could google, ‘cept for opening the unit myself, but why risk voiding the warranty, I’d only had it for 1-2 weeks. Onkyo tech suggested I call Amazon, and without hesitation Amazon sent a replacement, no questions asked. Another 70+lb box arrived 2 days later. I replaced the receiver and a rattling speaker that worked, but had some loose parts inside, the speakers seem sealed. No issues with the new receiver so far. I’m very pleased.

Built around a solid and well-specified receiver, the HT-S7200 has earned its place at the top of Onkyo’s 2009 range of receiver/speaker packages. With five HDMI 1.3a inputs, the receiver is fully equipped to handle multiple sources carrying high-def 1080p video and HD audio from Dolby and DTS.The system also handles Dolby Pro Logic IIz, which adds a spacious new vertical dimension to movie and game soundtracks. Connected component- or composite-video sources can be upscaled to 1080i and deinterlaced via Faroudja DCDi Edge to eliminate unwanted artifacts. Meanwhile, sophisticated Audyssey technologies work to optimize volume levels and adjust the sound stage to suit your room’s acoustics. Further convenience is provided by a Universal Port, which enables one-cable connection of the included Dock for the iPod or Onkyo’s optional HD Radio tuner. The highlight of the well-balanced speaker package is a pair of floor-standing, dual-drive tallboys that deliver a fuller mid-range while making a sleek visual statement. Deinterlacer with Faroudja DCDi Edge (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) Technology Audyssey 2EQ to Correct Room Acoustic Problems Universal Port for Single-Cable Connection of UP-A1 Dock for the iPod or Optional Onkyo HD Radio Tuner HDTV-Capable (720p/1080i) Component Video Switching (2 Inputs and 1 Output) HD Radio Ready 40 FM/AM Radio Presets 7.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker System
