4 Stars Great system for the price
I needed multiple HDMI inputs and also something that would let me play music from my iPod while I decide on whether to add an AppleTV to the mix. I currently have a digital cable box & blue ray DVD player hooked up. Set up was a breeze. The color coded speaker wires for each speaker was a nice touch, however I ended up pulling my own wire through the house so didn’t use it. A word of caution – the listening mode is very important. The default setting on mine didn’t product any center channel sound (no voices on TV/movies) and it took me a while to figure that one out. On the flip side, the technical support folks at Onkyo were very helpful and patient with me. Also, be aware that the HDMI just passes through to the TV. The receiver doesn’t do anything with it and you will need a seperate digital connection from the source to the receiver for the sound. I at least knew this going in. I would much prefer that it did use the sound from the HDMI conncetion, however that seems to be a more expensive option, so I certainly cannot complain given the price of this unit.
5 Stars True Japanese Attention to Detail
If you are going to spend big bucks on a big screen TV, why not get a top rated audio system too.
Founnd the Onkyo 5200 system new for $447 total with shipping. With Direct TV Total Choice can listen to XM radio without turning on my 52″ TV.
So far, have the center and front speakers hooked up along with the sub woofer. Like the adjustable active sub woofer volume knob. Have more speaker wire on the way for the long wire runs on my side and rear speakers. Next, will begin mounting more speakers with the Sanus mount system.
The clear sound quality of this powerful 1200 watt system is superior for the money- as many reputable online review sources said. The powered (110 volt) sub woofer will make the floor shake and windows rattle. All of the wires are fully color coded making it very easy to hook up with no mistakes. It would be hard to be unable to easily get this system up and running if you can read this.
Consumer Reports rated the Onkyo 5100 model that this system recently replaced their highest rated choice for a home theater system. It was the only model that they rated “very good” for sound quality. All of the rest only rated “good” per their tests. This 5200 model is a new release to replace their 5100 system.
You can’t go wrong here for sound quality at a budget price. One will not find Onkyo systems at Wal Mart. One review source said Onkyo consistently beats other brands.
Did my research before buying this system and now have no regrets. My goal was top quality sound- period. Will add extras (DVD player…) after I have the system set up and properly tuned with their included syncronization mic system that automatically adjusts the system for each unique application, room size, etc.
3 Stars great BUT
This is a great setup but there is one problem…the wiring hookup from the receiver to the speakers is really badly designed….For the life of me, I cannot understand why they would use such an inadequate design….It is very iffy in trying to connect the speakers to the receiver…be sure to look at this prior to buying…if I had noticed I would have bought another system
4 Stars Best system for the price….
I’ve been using this for about a month now and I can say you cannot beat this system for the price. The sound is incredible, in fact it’s a little too overwhelming at first and I had to actually tone it down a bit with the manual settings. Using the auto-config was a cool feature but I found the bass and surround speakers to be a bit too loud for my taste. I agree with another reviewer – make sure you understand the dimensions before you buy, the speakers are definitely larger than most surround system’s I’ve seen (even the subwoofer is huge!). I’m still playing around with the settings as they’re a bit tricky to get right and it seems like they keep going back to the defaults even after I change them but maybe it’s something I’m not doing correctly. Also, I guess all of the sound modes are great, but it takes a bit of experimenting to find the right one(s) for whatever you’re listening too (music, games, movies, cable/satellite, etc). All in all this is a great system!
5 Stars Clean sound. Great quality for the price!
The remote can also control your tv and dvd (but not your cable box). It was simple to set up. The look of the speakers is sleek. I highly recommend this surround.
